Using this template rather than simply inserting the date into articles allows for the inclusion of hidden metadata about the date. This metadata can be used by web browsers and other software tools to extract the details, and display them using some other website or mapping tool, index, or search them. For an article about a living person, consider using {{Birth date and age}} instead. Usage Unnamed parameters for year, month, day {{Infobox military person|year of birth|month of birth|day of birth|additional parameters}} Named parameters for year, month, day {{Infobox military person|year=year of birth|month=month of birth|day=day of birth|additional parameters}} Additional parameters The df (day first) and mf (month first) parameters indicate the intended date format to display. The appropriate parameter should be set to "y" or "yes", e.g. |df=y or |df=yes. The default output of this template is to display the month before the day. This default may not be appropriate for articles about people from parts of the world where the day precedes the month in a date. In such articles the parameter, "df", should be set to display the day before the month. The parameter "mf", while not actually used by the template, will indicate that month first format is intended. Using these parameters can assist bots or other automated processing to detect which date format is intended; leaving the format as default may lead an editor or bot to change the format to an unintended value. Do not specify both "df" and "mf" parameters in the same use of the template, as these formats are mutually exclusive. hCard microformat This template also returns the date, hidden by CSS, in the ISO 8601 standard. For example: (<span class="bday">1993-02-24</span>) Note: For the "foundation", "built" and similar set-up dates of companies, buildings etc., use {{start date}} (this will work for year-only or month-year dates). Because the ISO 8601 standard requires the Gregorian calendar, this template should not be used if the date is given in the Julian calendar. For further information, visit the microformats project. Notes Do not use with non-Gregorian dates because the resulting hCard hidden date will be false. The template will appear broken when the parameters are left blank. When only the month or year of a person's birth and/or death are known, or if it is desired not to state a person's full dates of birth for privacy reasons, consider using the templates {{Birth year}} or {{Birth year and age}} instead. Note: When using parameters, avoid the ambiguous abbreviation "N/A", and instead use "unknown" or "none". • honorific_prefix – titles such as "Sir", "General".
• name – the full name of the person.
• honorific_sufffix – post-nominal honours such as "OBE"
• native_name – the person's name in their own language
• native_name_lang – ISO 639-2 code e.g. "fre" or "fra" for French. If more than one, use {{lang}} for |native_name= instead
• image – optional – an image of the person. The image must be given in the form Example.jpg; an image of a nation's highest award, such as the Medal of Honor or Victoria Cross, may be displayed for recipients of it, especially as a placeholder.
• image_size – optional – the size of the image in px. Give the number without the px suffix (for example, 220 rather than 220px).
• alt Alt text, if used, must be placed here.
• caption – optional – the text to be placed below the image.
• birth_date – optional – the date of birth, if known, using {{Birth date}} or {{Birth date and age}}.
• death_date – optional – the date of death, if applicable and known, in {{Death date and age}}.
• birth_place – optional – the person's birthplace.
• death_place – optional – the place where the person died.
• placeofburial – optional – the place where the person's remains are buried or otherwise interred.
• placeofburial_label – optional – the label to use for the placeofburial field (above); this is intended to be used in cases where the remains were disposed of in a manner other than burial, and defaults to "Buried at" if not set.
• placeofburial_coordinates – optional – the precise location where the person's remains are buried or otherwise interred. For coordinates, use {{coord}} with display=inline,title. Please do not be overly precise.
• nickname – optional – nickname(s) by which the person was known.
• birth_name – optional – the name the person was born with, if different from that used later in life.
• allegiance – optional – the country or other power the person served. Multiple countries may be indicated together with the corresponding dates. This field should not be used to indicate a particular service branch, which is better indicated by the branch field (below).
• branch – optional – the service branch (Army, Navy, etc.) the person was a part of; this should be left blank for people who were not part of a formal armed service, or who predate the establishment of formal service branches.
• serviceyears – optional – the years during which the person served.
• rank – optional – the highest rank achieved by the person. Unusual cases, such as this rank not being the last achieved, or the rank being awarded posthumously, may be noted. In cases where the person held different ranks in different armies, multiple ranks should be specified with a date and country note for each. Separate multiple entries using {{Plainlist}}.
• service number – optional – the service number held by the individual during military service.
• unit – optional – for persons who are not notable as commanding officers, the unit (company, battalion, regiment, etc.) in which they served. This should be omitted if the commands are specified (as above).
• commands – optional – for persons who are notable as commanding officers, the units they commanded. Dates should be given if multiple notable commands were held. Separate multiple entries using {{Plainlist}}.
• battles – optional – any notable battles or wars in which the person participated. This should be omitted if a campaignbox is used in conjunction with this template.
• battles_label – optional – the label to use for the battles field (above); defaults to "Battles/wars". Separate multiple entries using {{Plainlist}}.
• awards – optional – any notable awards or decorations the person received; exhaustive lists should be worked into the prose. Separate multiple entries using {{Plainlist}}.
• relations – optional – any notable relations. Only reasonably close ones should be indicated; an exhaustive listing of an extensive family tree should be avoided here.
• laterwork – optional – profession or positions held by the person other than military service (displays with the label "Other work"). Separate multiple entries using {{Plainlist}}.
• signature – optional – an image of the person's signature. The image must be given in the form example.jpg.
• signature_size – optional – the size of the signature in px. Give the number without the px suffix.
• signature_alt – optional – alt text for the signature.
• website – optional – Use {{URL}}

For parameters which take lists of values, such as |unit= or |commands=, use {{Plainlist}}.

Embedding

Many military people are known for more than just their military service (e.g., Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and James Stewart), and hence it may be desirable to merge this infobox with another one, like {{Infobox person}}. By adding "|embed=yes" to the first line of the infobox code, one can embed this infobox into another, creating the illusion of one continuous infobox. Though the process is a little complicated, it is possible to insert this infobox into most if not all other infoboxes. For {{Infobox person}}, this infobox is passed as a "module" using the |module= syntax.
