ए॰बी॰ कीथ

आर्थर बेरीडेल कीथ (5 अप्रैल 1879 - 6 अक्टूबर 1944) स्कॉटलैण्ड के एक संवैधानिक वकील, संस्कृत के विद्वान और भारतविद् थे। वे एडिनबर्ग विश्वविद्यालय में संस्कृत और तुलनात्मक भाषाशास्त्र के रेगियस प्रोफेसर एवं ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के संविधान के व्याख्याता बनाये गये। उन्होंने 1914 से 1944 तक इस पद पर सेवा दी।

जीवनी

आर्थर बेरीडेल कीथ का जन्म एडिनबर्ग में हुआ था। उनके पिता डेविडसन कीथ एक विज्ञापन एजेंट थे। उनके सभी पांच भाई-बहन बर्मा और भारत में ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य से जुड़े थे: सर विलियम जॉन कीथ केसीएसआई, आईसीएस, 1925 में बर्मा के कार्यवाहक गवर्नर थे, स्टुअर्ट कीथ (1925 में मृत) बर्मा में एक सत्र न्यायाधीश थे, एलन डेविडसन कीथ (1928 में मृत्यु) ) बर्मा में बैरिस्टर थे। उनकी दोनों बहनों ने भारत एवं बर्मा क्षेत्र में रहने वाले ब्रिटिश प्रवासियों से विवाह किया ।

कीथ की शिक्षा एडिनबर्ग विश्वविद्यालय के रॉयल हाई स्कूल, से (एम ए 1897; DLitt 1914), और बैलिओल कॉलेज, ऑक्सफोर्ड (BA 1900; BCL 1905; DCL 1911) में हुई थी। संस्कृत और पालि का अध्यन किया (1900)। 1904 में उन्हें इनर टेंपल द्वारा बार में बुलाया गया और 1921 में वे फैकल्टी ऑफ एडवोकेट्स के सदस्य बने।

वह 1901 में एक क्लर्क के रूप में औपनिवेशिक कार्यालय में भर्ती हुए, उन्होंने गृह और भारतीय सिविल सेवा परीक्षाओं में प्रथम स्थान प्राप्त किया। कहा जाता है कि उन्हें अब तक के सबसे अधिक अंक मिले हैं। 1903 से 1905 तक क्राउन एजेंटों के साथ अवधि को छोड़कर, वह 1914 तक इस विभाग में रहे। 1912 से 1914 तक वे स्थायी अवर सचिव सर जॉन एंडरसन के निजी सचिव थे।

1914 में, वे एडिनबर्ग विश्वविद्यालय में संस्कृत और तुलनात्मक भाषाशास्त्र के रेगियस प्रोफेसर बने। 1927 में वे ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के संविधान के व्याख्याता भी बने।

कीथ को 1936 में लीड्स विश्वविद्यालय से मानद एलएलडी से सम्मानित किया गया था। 1935 में उन्हें ब्रिटिश अकादमी का फेलो चुना गया, लेकिन 1939 में उन्होंने इस्तीफा दे दिया।

उन्हें एडिनबर्ग में ग्रेंज कब्रिस्तान में उनकी पत्नी मार्गरेट बालफोर एलन (मृत्यु 1934) के साथ दफनाया गया है।
