इंजन एवं मोटर का विकास सभ्यता के विकास के इतिहास का शायद सबसे महत्वपूर्ण अध्याय है क्योंकि इनके बिना मशीनीकरण की कल्पना नहीं की जा सकती। इनके बिना स्वतः नियन्त्रण (आटॉमैटिक कन्ट्रोल) का भी कोई अर्थ नहीं है। आज भी मोटर एवं इंजन ही प्रौद्योगिकी के रीढ बने हुए हैं।
- (c. 30 - 70 AD) - एलेग्जैंड्रिया के नायक ने सबसे पहली वाष्प-चालित युक्ति बनायी जिसका दस्तावेज उपलब्ध है। इसे ओलिपाइल (aeolipile) कहते थे।
- 1698 - थॉमस सावरी (Thomas Savery) ने वाष्प-चालित जल-पम्प बनाया जो खदानों से पानी को बाहर निकालने के काम आता था।

- 1877 - निकोलस ऑटो (Nikolaus Otto) ने चार स्ट्रोकी अन्तर्दहन इंजन का पैटेन्ट कराया (U.S. Patent 1,94,047)
- 1888 - निकोला टेस्ला (Nikola Tesla) ने प्रेरण मोटर (induction motor) का पैटेन्ट कराया (U.S. Patent 3,81,968)
- 1892 - रूडॉल्फ् डीजल (Rudolf Diesel) ने डीजल इंजन का पेटेन्ट कराया (U.S. Patent 6,08,845)
- 1929 - Felix Wankel patents the Wankel rotary engine (U.S. Patent 29,88,008)
- 1937 - Hans von Ohain builds a gas turbine
- 1960s - मोटरगाडियों में डीसी जनित्र के स्थान पर अल्टर्नेटर के प्रयोग का आरम्भ
- 1970s - electronically controlled ignition appears in automobile engines
- 1975 - Catalytic converters are first widely introduced on production automobiles in the US
to comply with tightening EPA regulations on auto exhaust
- 1980s - electronically controlled ignition improved to reduce pollution
- 1980s - electronic fuel injection appears on gasoline automobile engines
- 1990s - संकर वाहन (Hybrid vehicle) का चलन : इनमें एक [[अन्तर्दहन इंजन] (internal combustion engine) के साथ-साथ एक वैद्युत मोटर की भी व्यवस्था होती है।
