Usage

This template is used to display dental formulae of heterodont animals for use within text. The template generates both a rendered formula and alternative text for cases where the image cannot be displayed.

Parameters

upper: (Required)—The upper dentition given in the formula Incisors.Canines.Premolars.Molars (e.g. 2.1.3.3) lower: (Required)—The lower dentition given in the formula Incisors.Canines.Premolars.Molars (e.g. 2.1.3.3) total: (Optional)—The total number of teeth in the mouth as an integer

Examples

Permanent dentition

To display a normal, permanent dentition and nothing more, provide both upper and lower parameters. These are usually formatted with numbers separated by periods (".") in the order Incisors.Canines.Premolars.Molars, counting from the midline of the face to the back (thus providing only half the number of teeth on both the upper and lower jaw).

Deciduous dentition

To display a normal, deciduous dentition (a.k.a. "milk teeth") and nothing more, provide both upper and lower parameters in the same format as the permanent dentition example above. However, molars are usually absent in the deciduous dentition, so only provide Incisors.Canines.Premolars.

Dentition with tooth count

To display the dentition (permanent or deciduous) along with the tooth count, additionally provide the total parameter, an integer that equals the total number of teeth in the mouth (upper count plus lower count times two).
