चीन के शास्त्रीय उपन्यास
चीनी साहित्य में क्लासिक चीनी उपन्यास से तात्पर्य चार या छह सबसे प्रसिद्ध पारंपरिक चीनी उपन्यासों के दो सेट से है। चार शास्त्रीय उपन्यासों (四大奇书; 四大奇書; sì dà qíshū; 'चार अतुलनीय पुस्तकें') में तीन राज्यों का रोमांस, पश्चिम की यात्रा, जल सीमा और लाल कक्ष का स्वप्न शामिल हैं और छः क्लासिक नॉवेल्स में इस सूची में रुलिन वाइशी (विद्वानों का इतिहास) और जिन पिंग मेई (सुनहरे फूलदान में बेर) भी शामिल कर लिए जाते हैं। ये दुनिया के सबसे लंबे और सबसे पुराने उपन्यासों में आते हैं, [1] और सभी पूर्व-आधुनिक चीनी कथाओं में से सबसे अधिक पढ़े जाने वाले उपन्यास हैं, साथ ही इन्हीं पर सर्वाधिक अध्ययन और रूपांतरित कार्य आधारित हैं।[2][3][4][5]

इन्हें शास्त्रीय चीनी और आम बोलचाल की भाषा के मिश्रण में लिखा गया है। पुराने ज़माने में चीन में उपन्यास को साहित्य की शैली के रूप में उतना सम्मान नहीं मिलता था जितना कविताओं को मिलता था। किंतु आज इनमें रुचि का पुनर्जागरण देखने को मिलता है।[1]

While most attribute the novel to Shi Nai'an, there were some who believe that the novel, or portions of it, was written by others, such as Luo Guanzhong (the author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms), Shi Hui (施惠) and Guo Xun (郭勛).
