Turban ornament (incomplete)

On acquisition this was said to have come from the Jaipur treasury, and to have been made in Jaipur, which was a renowned centre of enamelling. It illustrates the technique used for most gold Mughal jewellery, which was made in two halves (this is the back) separated by a layer of lac, a natural resin which softens when heated. The stones were set into the front over a layer of highly refined gold, through shaped holes cut into the gold. The back was enamelled, and the two parts skilfully joined together.
