बर्ट्रेंड रसेल (18 मई 1872 - 3 फ़रवरी 1970) अंतरराष्ट्रीय ख्याति प्राप्त ब्रिटिश दार्शनिक, गणितज्ञ, वैज्ञानिक, शिक्षाशास्त्री, राजनीतिज्ञ, समाजशास्त्री तथा लेखक थे।

जीवनी

रसेल का जन्म ट्रेलेक, वेल्स के प्राचीनतम एवं प्रतिष्ठित रसेलघराने में 18 मई सन् 1872 में हुआ था। तीन वर्ष की अबोधावस्था में ही ये अनाथ हो गए। इनके सर से माता-पिता का साया उठ गया। इनके पितामह ने इनका लालन-पालन किया। इनकी शिक्षा-दीक्षा घर पर ही हुई। उनका परिवार ब्रिटेन के उन ऐतिहासिक परिवारों में रहा, जिन्होंने ब्रिट्रेन की राजनीति में सदैव महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई, लेकिन उस युग में स्त्री मताधिकार तथा जनसंख्या नियंत्रण जैसे वर्जित मुद्दों की वकालत के लिए यह परिवार विवादास्पद भी रहा। इनके अग्रज की मृत्यु के पश्चात् 35 वर्ष की वय में इन्हें लार्ड की उपाधि प्राप्त हुई। इनका चार बार विवाह हुआ। प्रथम विवाह 22 वर्ष की वय में और अंतिम 80 वर्ष की वय में।

शिक्षा एवं कार्य

अर्ल रसेल ने ट्रिनिटी कॉलेज, कैम्ब्रिज से गणित और नैतिक विज्ञान की शिक्षा पाई। छत्तीस वर्ष की छोटी उम्र में ही उन्हें रॉयल सोसायटी का फेलो बना दिया गया। वे फेबियन सोसायटी, मुक्त व्यापार आंदोलन, स्त्री मताधिकार, विश्व शांति तथा परमाणु अस्त्रों के निषेध के पूर्ण समर्थक थे। उन्होंने कई विषयों पर अनेक पुस्तकें लिखीं, जिनमें प्रमुख हैं- हिस्ट्री ऑव वेस्टर्न फिलासॉफी, द प्रिंसिपल्स ऑव मेथेमेटिक्स, मैरिज एंड मॉरल्स, द प्राब्लम ऑव चायना, अनऑर्म्ड विक्ट्री तथा प्रिंसिपल्स ऑव सोशल रिकंस्ट्रक्शन आदि।

प्रारंभ से ही इनकी रुचि गणित और दर्शन की ओर थी, बाद में समाजशास्त्र इनका तीसरा विषय हो गया। इन्होंने 11 वर्ष की अल्प वय में गणित के एक सिद्धांत का अनुसंधान किया था जो इनके जीवन की एक महान घटना थी। गणित के क्षेत्र में इनकी देन शास्त्रीय थी, जिससे वह बहुत लोकप्रिय नहीं हो सके, लेकिन महानता निर्विवाद है। ए. एन. ह्वाइकहैड के सहयोग से रचित "प्रिसिपिया मैथेमेटिका" अपने ढंग का अपूर्व ग्रंथ है। इन्होंने "नाभिकी भौतिकी" और "सापेक्षता" पर भी लिखा है।

बट्र्रेंड रसेल "रायल ह्यूमन सोसाइटी" के सदस्य रहे। प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध के समय अपनी शांतिवादी नीतियों के कारण इन्हें जेलयात्रा करनी पड़ी। महायुद्ध की समाप्ति के पश्चात् "बोल्शेविज्म" पर एक ग्रंथ की रचना की। ये पेकिंग, शिकागो, हॉरवर्ड और न्यूयार्क के विश्वविद्यालयों में दर्शनशास्त्र के प्राध्यापक रहे। ये ब्रिटेन की "इंडिया लीग" के अध्यक्ष चुने गए थे। अत: भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम से भी इनका निकट का संबंध था। अपनी इच्छा के विपरीत ये सदैव किसी न किसी विवाद या आंदोलन से संबंधित रहे। वृद्धावस्था में भी ये परमाणु-परीक्षणविरोधी आंदोलनों के सूत्रधार थे। "विवाह और नैतिकता" नाम की इनकी पुस्तक लंबी अवधि तक विवाद का विषय बनी रही। द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध की विभीषिका के फलस्वरूप गणित और दर्शन के अतिरिक्त समाजशास्त्र, राजनीति, शिक्षा एवं नैतिकता संबंधी समस्याओं ने भी इनकी चिंतनधारा को प्रभावित किया। ये विश्वसंघीय सरकार के कट्टर समर्थक थे। इन्होंने पाप की परंपरावादी गलत धारा का खंडन कर आधुनिक युग में पाप के प्रति यथार्थवादी एवं वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण का प्रतिपादन किया।

बट्र्रेंड रसेल बीसवीं शती के प्रख्यात दार्शनिक, महान गणितज्ञ और शांति के अग्रदूत थे। विश्व की चिंतनधारा को इतना अधिक प्रभावित करनेवाले ऐसे महापुरुष कभी कदाचित् ही उत्पन्न होते हैं। इन्हें मानवता से प्रेम था; ये जीवनपर्यंत इस युग के पाखंडों और बुराइयों के विरुद्ध संघर्षरत रहे। युद्ध, परमाणविक परीक्षण एवं वर्णभेद का विरोध इनका लक्ष्य था। दक्षिण वियतनाम में अमरीका के सैनिकों की बर्बरता और नरसंहार की जाँच के लिए संयुक्तराष्ट्र संघ से अंतर्राष्ट्रीय युद्धापराध आयोग के गठन की सबल शब्दों में माँग कर इस महामानव ने विश्वमानवता का सर्वोच्च स्थान पर प्रतिष्ठित किया।

सन् 1950 में इन्हें साहित्य का "नोबेल" पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। इन्होंने 40 ग्रंथों का प्रणयन किया था। "इंट्रोडक्शन टु मैथेमेटिकल फिलॉसॉफी", आउटलाइन ऑव फिलॉसॉफी" तथा मैरेज एेंड मोरैलिटी" इसकी महत्वपूर्ण कृतियाँ हैं।

3 फ़रवरी 1970 को 9८ वर्ष की वय में इनका देहांत हो गया।

सम्मान एवं पुरस्कार

रसेल को कई पुरस्कार व सम्मान प्राप्त हुए, जिनमें ऑर्डर ऑव मेरिट (1949), साहित्य नोबल पुरस्कार (1950), कलिंग पुरस्कार (1957) तथा डेनिश सोनिंग पुरस्कार (1960) प्रमुख हैं। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के प्रति अपनी सहानुभूति के कारण उन्हें ब्रिटेन में बनी इंडिया लीग का अध्यक्ष भी बनाया गया। प्रेम पाने की उत्कंठा, ज्ञान की खोज तथा मानव की पीड़ाओं के प्रति असीम सहानुभूति इन तीन भावावेगों ने उनके 97 वर्ष लंबे जीवन को संचालित किया।
