The Kollam temple fireworks explosion was a catastrophic fireworks explosion that occurred at the Puttingal temple in Kollam on 10 April 2016 at 03:30 IST (22:15 GMT).

In the early hours of 10 April 2016, at the Hindu Puttingal Temple in the Paravur village in the Kollam district of Kerala, India. As a result, 102 people died and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns,[1] after firework celebrations went awry. Local reports blame the explosion and fire on firecrackers which were being used in a celebration.[2][3] The temple did not have permission from Kerala government authorities to conduct a "competitive fireworks display." About 15,000 pilgrims were visiting the temple to mark local Hindu celebrations.

The fire occurred at about 3:00-3:30 when a explosion occurred in a stash of firecrackers stored in the temple for upcoming Vishu[तथ्य वांछित] celebrations. The explosion caused the temple to collapse leading to most of the casualties.[4] The blast was felt by people living more than a kilometre away from the temple.[4][1].

बचाव

The Indian Navy has dispatched one Dornier Flugzeugwerke transport aircraft and two helicopters for rescue transport along with medical teams from Headquarters Southern Naval Command (HQSNC), Indian naval air station located in Kochi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that the accident was "heart-rending and shocking beyond words". Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his way to visit the area later in the afternoon, as was Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. BJP national president Amit Shah, who was in Kozhikode for a party event visited the victims at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will also visit the victims. Prime Minister has announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to critically injured people. Home Minister of Kerala Ramesh Chennithala visits the disaster site.
