सारजेंट शिक्षा योजना (अंग्रेज़ी: Sergeant Scheme) भारतीय स्वतंत्रता से पहले सन् १९४४ में ब्रिटिश-भारतीय सरकार द्वारा तैयार की गई एक योजना थी जिसका ध्येय भारत को ४० वर्षों के अन्दर (यानि सन् १९८४ तक) पूर्णतः साक्षर बनाना था। इसमें शिक्षा और साक्षरता के विस्तार के मनसूबे थे जिनके परिपालन से ब्रिटिश सरकार देशभर में पाठशालाओं का जाल फैलाने और हर भारतीय को १९८४ तक पढ़ा-लिखा बनाने का ज़िम्मा लेने वाली थी।[1]

सारजेंट योजना का औपचारिक नाम 'भारत में युद्ध-उपरान्त शिक्षा विकास पर सारजेंट कमीशन की रिपोर्ट' (Report of the Sergeant Commission on Post-War Education Development in India, रिपोर्ट ऑफ़ द सारजेंट कमिशन ऑन पोस्ट-वॉर ऍजुकेशन डॅवॅलप्मॅन्ट इन इण्डिया) था। सारजेंट योजना के तहत ६ से ११ वर्षों के हर भारतीय बच्चे को अनिवार्य रूप से मुफ़्त शिक्षा प्रदान करने का ज़िम्मा ब्रिटिश-भारतीय सरकार का होता। यह प्रस्ताव केन्द्रीय शिक्षा सलाहकार समिति के सामने रखा गया और इसको पूरी मंज़ूरी दे दी गई।[2]

जब प्रस्ताव के समाचार अख़बारों में आए, तो राष्ट्रवादी नेताओं ने खुलकर इसकी बहुत खिल्ली उड़ाई क्योंकि उनके अनुसार 'भारत में इतना सब्र नहीं है कि वह ४० साल तक बिना पूरा साक्षर हुए बैठ सके'।[3] यह बात और है कि स्वतंत्रता के बाद २००९ तक (यानि सारजेंट प्रस्ताव के ६५ सालों बाद) भी अर्थशास्त्री अमर्त्य सेन को कहना पड़ा कि 'देश अभी भी आधा अनपढ़ है, दो-तिहाई स्त्रियाँ अनपढ़ हैं'।[3] सन् २००८ तक भारतीय साक्षरता स्तर केवल ६५% पहुँचा था और हर वर्ष केवल १.५% की 'धीमी गति' पर बढ़ रहा था।[4]
