The History of Kyokushinkai karate in Iran

Sensei Yosef Shirzad began training in Shotokan with Sensei Mashinchiyan in Tehran Baharstan. He then changed style to Kan-Zen-Ryu with Sensei Farhath Waraste for many years. Sensei Shirzad opened his own karate dojo with the name Maktab karate. He had many students and was a good teacher.

In 1974 Sensei Shirzad Kazen and his cousin Sensei Jafar Tabatabaei trained together, but Sensei Tabatabaei preferred kumitté (fighting). Sensei Jafar Tabatabaei spoke to his cousin about the style of Kyokushinkai and the next day brought along a Mas Oyama book (This is Karate) to Sensei Shirzad, who saw amazing images. He asked one of his students, Mr. Faramarz, who had a good knowledge of Mas Oyama’s language, to contact Mas Oyama so that he could send his student, Shihan Abu Tazar, medallist, to Kyokushinkai Branch. Mas Oyama then contacted the Middle East Branch Chief who, in turn, sent Shihan Abdul Salam Yasin to train Shirzad at his own dojo. He was there for about two years and taught all students Kyokushinkai proper.

Mas Oyama, after this time, sent Shirzad an invitation to come to Japan for 15 days training. Shirzad then received his Branch Chief certificate, achieving 3rd Dan, and returned to Iran.

1982 Captain Mohammad Reza Promohsani spoke to Shihan Higinoo Hombu dojo Manager about using Kyokushinkai to train the Iranian police. Mr Higinoo very quickly, on December 1982, contacted Captain Promahsani and Tabatabaei and said come to Japan to train for 3 months. After Promahsani gained Branch Chief status and received a certificate.
