ईंधन के रूप प्रयुक्त एथनॉल भी रासायनिक रूप से एथिल अल्कोहल ही है जो सामान्य तौर के अल्कोहलिक पेयों में पाया जाता है। जैवएथेनॉल, जैविक चीजों से प्राप्त किया जाता है, जैसे गन्ने के रस से। एथेनॉल को पेट्रोल के साथ मिलाकर मोटर वाहनों के ईंधन के रूप में प्रयोग में लाया जाता है। प्राय: ५% से लेकर ८५% तक एथेनॉल मिश्रित किया जाता है।
