सजातीय शब्द, जिन्हें अंग्रेजी में काग्नेट (cognate) शब्द कहा जाता है, भिन्न भाषाओं के वे शब्द होते हैं जो अलग भाषाओं से होने के बावजूद एक ही प्राचीन जड़ रखते हैं। इस कारण से इन सजातीय शब्दों का जिनका रूप और अर्थ अक्सर मिलता-जुलता होता है, हालांकि ये आवश्यक नहीं है के उनका अर्थ बिल्कुल सामान हो। उदहारण के रूप में मातृ (संस्कृत), मादर (फ़ारसी), मातर (लातिन) और मदर (अंग्रेजी) का रूप सामान सा है और सब का अर्थ माँ है क्योंकि यह सारी भाषाएँ एक ही आदिम-हिन्द-यूरोपीय (Proto-Indo-European) भाषा से उपजी संतानें हैं।
