रघुनाथ महतो (21 मार्च 1738 - 5 अप्रैल 1778) एक भारतीय क्रांतिकारी थे, जिन्होने 1769-78 में अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध चुआड़ विद्रोह का नेतृत्व किया था। चुआड़ विद्रोह, छोटानागपुर क्षेत्र में अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ पहला विद्रोह था।[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

जीवन

रघुनाथ महतो का जन्म 21 मार्च 1738 ई को वर्तमान सराइकेला खरसावाँ जिले के नीमडीह प्रखंड के घुंटियाडीह गांव में हुआ था।[8][4][5] उन्होंने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ जो विद्रोह किया था, उसे चुआड़ विद्रोह के नाम से जाना जाता है। उन्होंने "अपना गांव, अपना राज; दूर भगाओ विदेशी राज" का नारा दिया था।[5][4] अंग्रेजों ने अपने पिट्ठू जमींदारों से पूछा ये लोग कौन हैं, तो उन्होंने इन विद्रोहियों को नीचा दिखाने के लिए उन्हें ‘चुआड़’ (लुटेरा, नीच व उत्पाती) कहकर संबोधित किया। जो सभ्य समाज के असभ्य लोगों को संदर्भित करता है।[9][10][11] विद्रोह करने वालों में महतो,[12][13][14][15][16] भूमिज, बाउरी और अन्य समुदाय शामिल थे। प्रथम चुआड़ विद्रोह की अवधि 1767 से 1783 ईस्वी तक थी।[17][18][19] 5 अप्रैल 1778 ई को रघुनाथ महतो अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध लड़ते हुए शहीद हो गए।[20][4][5]
