मुहल्ला या मोहल्ला (neighbourhood) किसी नगर, क़स्बे, या गाँव में ऐसे सीमांकित भौगोलिक क्षेत्र को कहते हैं जहाँ के निवासी एक-दूसरे के निकट रहते हैं और दैनिक रूप से एक-दूसरे के सम्मुख होते हैं। "समाजशास्त्रियों में मोलल्लों की कोई सर्वसम्म्त परिभाषा नहीं है। स्थानीय रूप से मुहल्ले विशेष भौगोलिक क्षेत्र और कार्यात्मक दृष्टि से समाजिक रिश्तों के संजालो के समूह होते हैं। मुहल्ले ऐसी स्थानीय ईकाई होते हैं जहाँ सम्मुख होकर लोग बातचीत और अन्य अंतःक्रियाएँ करते हैं। यह वे निजी स्थान व मौक़े होते हैं जहाँ निवासी साँझे मूल्यों को जारी रखते हैं, युवाओं को सामाजिक धारा से जोड़ते हैं और सामाजिक नियंत्रण बनाए रखते हैं।"[1] आधुनिक भारत के कुछ क्षेत्रों में मुहल्ले के लिए अंग्रेज़ी का कॉलोनी (colony) शब्द भी प्रयोग होने लगा है।[2]

प्रशासनिक महत्व[संपादित करें]

समाजों में लोग अक्सर सबसे अधिक अपने मुहल्लों में ही एक-दूसरे को प्रभावित करते हैं। इसलिए कई देशों और राज्यों में क़ानून, शिक्षा, सामाजिक कार्य, विकास, स्वास्थ्य, विद्युत, जल, कूड़ा और अन्य सेवाएँ मुहल्लों के आधार पर ही उपलब्ध बनाई जाती हैं। कुछ क्षेत्रों में शहरों को औपचारिक रूप से मुहल्लों में बाँटा जाता है:
