इज़्ज़त उत्तर भारत और पाकिस्तान की संस्कृति में मान, सम्मान और प्रतिष्ठा की मिश्रित संकल्पना (अर्थात कॅान्सेप्ट) है।[1] यह उस क्षेत्र में रहने वाले सारे धर्मों (हिन्दू, मुस्लिम, सिख) और समुदायों पर लागू है।[2][3][4] अपनी और अपने परिवार की (विशेषतः परिवार की स्त्रियों की) मान-प्रतिष्ठा बनाए रखना और अपनी इज्ज़त का उल्लंघन करने वालों से अनिवार्य रूप से बदला लेना इज्ज़त रखने के अभिन्न अंग माने जाते हैं।[5]घर के छोटे से बच्चे को शुरुआत से ही बड़ों की इज़्ज़त करनी सिखाई जाती है जो उसके लिए काफी महत्वपूर्ण है। ऐसा भी देखा गया है कि लोग अक्सर दूसरों से इज़्ज़त की अपेक्षा करते हैं, परन्तु लोग उन्हीं की इज़्ज़त करते हैं जो अपने आप की इज़्ज़त करता है।

इज्ज़त की संकल्पना को कभी-कभी स्त्री-स्वतंत्रता के लिए सामाजिक अवरोधक बुलाया गया है, लेकिन हर सामाजिक वर्ग में इज्ज़त की एक ही परिभाषा होने से इसे समाज में समानता लाने का भी एक मूल समझा जाता है जिसमें "(दोस्ती की स्थिति में) लेन-देन की बराबरी भी है और (दुश्मनी की स्थिति में) बदला लेने की भी।"[5][6] किसी भी रिश्ते में दोनों ओर से बराबर की दोस्ती या दुश्मनी जतलाने की परंपरा इज्ज़त की रिवायत से जुड़ी हुई है। अगर किसी ने पहले किसी परिस्थिति में सहायता की हो तो भविष्य में ज़रुरत पड़ने पर उसकी सहायता करना इस क्षेत्र के समाज में अपनी इज्ज़त रखने के लिए अनिवार्य माना जाता है।[5]

सैन्य संस्कृति में[संपादित करें]

भारत के सशस्त्र बल इज्जत की अवधारणा को एक शक्तिशाली प्रेरक के रूप में शामिल करते हैं। सेना की कई इकाइयां अपने आदर्श वाक्य में इस शब्द का प्रयोग करती हैं, जैसे कि आर्टिलरी की भारतीय रेजिमेंट की "सर्वत्र इज्जत ओ इकबाल" (हर जगह सम्मान और महिमा के साथ)[7]
