बीरबल साहनी (नवंबर, 1891 - 10 अप्रैल, 1949) अंतरराष्ट्रीय ख्याति के पुरावनस्पति वैज्ञानिक थे।

जीवनी[संपादित करें]

बीरबल साहनी का जन्म नवंबर, 1891 को पश्चिमी पंजाब (पाकिस्तान) के शाहपुर जिले के भेड़ा नामक एक छोटे से व्यापारिक नगर में हुआ था, जो अब पाकिस्तान में है। इनके पिता रुचि राम साहनी रसायन के प्राध्यापक थे। उनका परिवार वहां डेरा इस्माइल खान से स्थानांतरित हो कर बस गया था।

शिक्षा[संपादित करें]

प्रोफेसर रुचि राम साहनी ने उच्च शिक्षा के लिए अपने पांचों पुत्रों को इंग्लैंड भेजा तथा स्वयं भी वहां गए। वे मैनचेस्टर गए और वहां कैम्ब्रिज के प्रोफेसर अर्नेस्ट रदरफोर्ड तथा कोपेनहेगन के नाइल्सबोर के साथ रेडियोसक्रियता पर अन्वेषण कार्य किया। प्रथम महायुद्ध आरंभ होने के समय वे जर्मनी में थे और लड़ाई छिड़ने के केवल एक दिन पहले किसी तरह सीमा पार कर सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुंचने में सफल हुए। वास्तव में उनके पुत्र बीरबल साहनी की वैज्ञानिक जिज्ञासा की प्रवृत्ति और चारित्रिक गठन का अधिकांश श्रेय उन्हीं की पहल एवं प्रेरणा, उत्साहवर्धन तथा दृढ़ता, परिश्रम औरईमानदारी को है। इनकी पुष्टि इस बात से होती है कि प्रोफेसर बीरबल साहनी अपने अनुसंधान कार्य में कभी हार नहीं मानते थे, बल्कि कठिन से कठिन समस्या का समाधान ढूंढ़ने के लिए सदैव तत्पर रहते थे। इस प्रकार, जीवन को एक बड़ी चुनौती के रूप में मानना चाहिए, यही उनके कुटुंब का आदर्श वाक्य बन गया था।

इनको १९१९ ई. में लन्दन विश्वविद्यालय से और १९२९ ई. में केंब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय से डी.एस-सी. की उपाधि मिली थी। भारत लौट आने पर ये पहले बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय में वनस्पति विज्ञान के प्राध्यापक नियुक्त हुए। १९३९ ई. में ये रॉयल सोसायटी ऑव लन्दन के सदस्य (एफ.आर.एस.) चुने गए और कई वर्षों तक सायंस कांग्रेस और नेशनल ऐकेडेमी ऑव सायंसेज़ के अध्यक्ष रहे। इनके अनुसंधान जीवाश्म (फॉसिल) पौधों पर सबसे अधिक हैं। इन्होंने एक फॉसिल 'पेंटोज़ाइली' की खोज की, जो राजमहल पहाड़ियों में मिला था। इसका दूसरा नमूना अभी तक कहीं नहीं मिला है। हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय से डा. साहनी लाहौर विश्वविद्यालय गए, जहाँ से लखनऊ में आकर इन्होंने २० वर्ष तक अध्यापन और अन्वेषण कार्य किया।

ये अनेक विदेशी वैज्ञानिक संस्थाओं के सदस्य थे। लखनऊ में डा. साहनी ने पैलिओबोटैनिक इंस्टिट्यूट की स्थापना की, जिसका उद्घाटन पं. जवाहरलाल ने १९४९ ई. के अप्रैल में किया था। पैलिओबोटैनिक इंस्टिट्यूट के उद्घाटन के बाद शीघ्र ही साहनी महोदय की मृत्यु हो गई। इन्होंने वनस्पति विज्ञान पर पुस्तकें लिखी हैं और इनके अनेक प्रबंध संसार के भिन्न भिन्न वैज्ञानिक जर्नलों में प्रकाशित हुए हैं। डा. साहनी केवल वैज्ञानिक ही नहीं थे, वरन् चित्रकला और संगीत के भी प्रेमी थे। भारतीय विज्ञान कांग्रेस ने इनके सम्मान में 'बीरबल साहनी पदक' की स्थापना की है, जो भारत के सर्वश्रेष्ठ वनस्पति वैज्ञानिक को दिया जाता है। इनके छात्रों ने अनेक नए पौधों का नाम साहनी के नाम पर रखकर इनके नाम को अमर बनाए रखने का प्रयत्न किया है।
