लिन्लिथगो (/lɪnˈlɪθɡoʊ/; गैलिक: Gleann Iucha, स्कॉट्स: Lithgae) स्कॉटलैंड के पश्चिमी लोथियन में स्थित एक शाही नगर है। यह पश्चिमी लोथियन का एक काउंटी है, और काउंटी का नाम लिन्लिथ्गोशायर इसके नाम पर है। यह एक प्राचीन नगर है जो इसके दो बेहद महत्वपूर्ण पर्यटन स्थलों लिन्लिथगो महल और लिन्लिथगो झील के दक्षिण व स्कॉटलैंड की यूनियन नहर के उत्तर में स्थित है।

लिन्लिथगो के कुल पुजारी सेंट माइकल हैं और इसका ध्येय वाक्य है St. Michael is kinde to straingers यानी संत माइकल अजनबियों के प्रति दयालु है। संत की एक मूर्ति नगर के कुल-चिन्ह को हाथ में लिए मुख्य मार्ग पर है।

स्थिति[संपादित करें]

लिन्लिथगो पश्चिमी लोथियन के पूर्वोत्तर में स्टर्लिंगशायर की सीमा के करीब है। यह एडिनबर्ग से 20 मील (30 कि॰मी॰) पश्चिम में ग्लासगो के मुख्य रेल मार्ग पर स्थित है। एम8 & एम9 के निर्माण और फोर्थ मार्ग पुल के खुलने से पहले यह नगर एडिनबर्ग से स्टर्लिंग जाने वाली मुख्य सडक के किनारे स्थित था। नहर इसे एडिनबर्ग और ग्लास्गो से जोडती है। नजदीकी गाँव ब्लैकनेस कभी बर्ग का बंदरगाह हुआ करता था। यहाँ एक छोटी सी पहाडी कॉक्लेरॉय है।

नामकरण[संपादित करें]

लिन्लिथगो नाम पुरानी ब्रिटिश lynn llaith cau से आता है जिसका मतलब है "नम घाटी में झील"।^[3] वस्तुत: "लिन्लिथगो" का मतलब लोक (सरोवर) से ही है, नगर को सिर्फ लिथ्गो के नाम से भी जानते हैं। यहाँ के कई लोगों के उपनाम भी लिथ्गो हैं। ^[3] पुरानी कहावतें इस नाम को गैलिक भाषा के liath gu यानी "हल्का काला कुत्ता" से भी जोडती हैं।^[3]

भूगोल[संपादित करें]

The town has a generally east-west orientation and is centred on what used to be the main Edinburgh-Stirling road; this now forms the main thoroughfare called the High Street. Plots of farmed land, known as rigs, ran perpendicular to the High Street and comprised much of the town's development until the 19th century. Growth was restricted to the north by Linlithgow Loch, and by the steep hill to the south, but, in the late 19th & early 20th centuries, development began to take place much further south of the High Street. In the late 20th century, demand for housing saw many residential developments take place much further south, as well as spreading into new areas. This southward development was bisected by the Union Canal and latterly the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line, and today the limited crossings of both cause problems with modern traffic as there are only three places where each can be crossed in the town.

To the west, Linlithgow Bridge used to be a somewhat distinct village with its own identity, but in the latter half of the 20th century it was enveloped in the expansion of the main town and today the distinction between them is hard to make out.

वेस्टमिंस्टर में, लिन्लिथगो लेलेबर पार्टी का मजबूत गढ रहा है। स्कॉटिश नैशन्लिस्ट पार्टी २०१५ से पहले तक अक्सर दूसरे स्थान पर आती रही है। यहाँ से वर्तमान सांसद स्कॉटिश नैशनल पार्टी के नेता मार्टिन डे हैं।^[4]
