फ़ोनीशिया

फ़ोनीशिया मध्य-पूर्व के उर्वर अर्धचंद्र के पश्चिमी भाग में भूमध्य सागर के तट के साथ-साथ स्थित एक प्राचीन सभ्यता थी। समुद्री व्यापार के ज़रिये यह 1550 से 300 ईसा-पूर्व के काल में भूमध्य सागर के दूर-दराज़ इलाक़ों में फैल गई। उन्हें प्राचीन यूनानी और रोमन लोग "जमुनी-रंग के व्यापारी" कहा करते थे क्योंकि रंगरेज़ी में इस्तेमाल होने वाले म्यूरक्स घोंघे से बनाए जाने वाले जामुनी रंग केवल इन्ही से मिला करता था। इन्होने जिस अक्षरमाला का इजाद किया उसपर विश्व की सारी प्रमुख अक्षरमालाएँ आधारित हैं। कई भाषावैज्ञानिकों का मानना है कि देवनागरी-सहित भारत की सभी वर्णमालाएँ इसी फ़ोनीशियाई वर्णमाला की संताने हैं।[1][2]
