पवित्र रोम साम्राज्य न ही पवित्र था और ना ही रोमन. मध्ययुग में यह मध्य यूरोप का हिस्सा था और आरंभिक आधुनिक काल में यह पवित्र रोमन सम्राट के अंदर आ गया. पवित्र रोम साम्राज्य के पहले सम्राट का राज्याभिषेक 962 में हुआ.[4]
